The writer to the Hebrews...

The writer to the Hebrews reflects on the wonder of the incarnation in this passage. It is made clear that the newness of God's activity in Christ is precisely the fact that God sent Jesus to be one of us, "to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people." (v. 17) The English writer Dorothy L. Sayers said it this way: "... for whatever reason God chose to make (humanity) as (it) is --limited and suffering and subject to sorrows and death --He had the honesty and courage to take His own medicine. Whatever game He is playing with His creation, He has kept His own rules and played fair. He can exact nothing from (humanity) that he has not exacted from Himself."
