Why is it that when Jesus chose this text to quote when he returned and worshiped in the synagogue in Nazareth, he used only a portion of the text? He concludes with the first portion of Isaiah 61:2 "... to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Some have speculated that Jesus stops short because the next phrase begins to focus upon the coming judgment. Jesus' first coming is characterized by good news, his second coming by judgment.
A well-known minister was questioned about his ministry because it seemed he was always talking about the positive, giving people hope, trying to help them see a better day. His critics said that his faith was superficial and only served as an opiate deadening the senses of the people to the deeper truths of the Gospel.
His reply:
It seems to me that my friends have forgotten the nature of the faith we seek to share. The longer I serve as a pastor and become acquainted with the hurts of my people, I become more convinced that what they need is Good News. There is the mother whose son is incorrigible, a man who has lost his job, a couple where the love in their relationship has faded, and the young lady who is still bound by the burdensome guilt of her former life. It is Good News my people need to hear to make it through another week.
