Where a person is addicted to alcohol, one can find a whole family and family's family affected by the alcohol.
The term co-dependent has come to mean a person who, although not perhaps addicted to the substance, lives as though controlled by it through interaction with the one addicted.
One can see how an entire household would be affected by the erratic, unsettling, painful, oppressive nature of alcoholism.
