When the writer to the Hebrews encourages getting together and exhorting one another, he is recognizing the value of peer influence and how much we need one another to grow our faith, hope, and love. In her foreword to Andrew Carroll's book Letters of a Nation, Marian Wright Edelman acknowledges this also. Edelman is founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund. She writes first of finding strength and guidance from God, but then identifies peers throughout history from whom guidance and strength can also be gleaned. "I also draw on the values and legacies of the great men and women of history ... Their words embolden me and remind me of what is important and meaningful in life." Whether in the company of those passed on or present with, we assemble in spirit and as a body to exhort and encourage and inspire and accompany one another for love and good deeds.
