When we moved into the retirement center where we now live, we passed on the family
pieces to our children. But the organ, none of the three wanted. We made an inquiry at
the center and learned that the Alzheimer's unit would be happy to have it. That sounded
right to us.
Something made us want to go to the Alzheimer building and play the organ, perhaps once a week. How would that be? The nurses received our suggestion with joy. Of course, come on! The residents will be so happy to hear the music.
So we ventured forth. Would the men and women be interested? Would they want, perhaps, to sing the old hymns with us? Well, we started out. Soon one woman came to the organ and joined us in singing a Christmas carol. Why, she knew every word. The lines were down in the computer of her soul, she had sung them so often.
Several join us these days when we go once a week to play and sing. Our eyes have been opened to appreciate what Alzheimer's patients do know and do remember.
