When Nellie arrived at Kasisi...

When Nellie arrived at Kasisi Orphanage in Zambia in 1993, there was little hope of her survival. One year old and suffering from post-tuberculosis meningitis, she also was found to have a large cancerous tumor in her brain. Some called her an example of the living dead.
But Sister Mariola loved Nellie and strove to see that Nellie received the care she needed. She arranged for an operation for Nellie in Zimbabwe, and the doctor was able to remove most of the cancerous tumor.
Nellie is now in second grade. She loves school, and gets up early on school mornings to ensure she is ready. Before leaving school, she hugs all her teachers.
Although Nellie is not, nor never will have perfect physical health, she is testimony that one as good as dead can live and enjoy life.
