When Neil Armstrong stepped out of Eagle onto the moon's surface on July 20, 1969, and said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," he entered an environment in which it was impossible for him to survive apart from his space suit and its support systems. But because of the capabilities of his unnatural environment -- the space suit -- and his identification with it, he was able to regard himself as dead to his inhospitable surroundings and alive to his experience of walking around the moon.
