When I was growing up, my grandmother had a favorite expression when referring to
things that cost what she considered an exorbitant amount of money. She would say that
they cost "a king's ransom." The term means a large treasure and might have derived
from the amount needed to ransom a captured king. At any rate, it is more than the
average person has.
If a king was ransomed for a huge treasure, then what would we call it when we are
ransomed not with the king's ransom, not with silver and gold or any other valuable, but
with the precious blood of Christ? How about grace?
