What do we postpone, what...

What do we postpone, what do we find difficult to acknowledge? A yearly screening for cancer? Terminating a bad relationship? Refusing to admit to an ever-present abusive situation? Avoiding those godward attempts of our heart? What then finally and decisively demands our attention?
A cartoon recently appeared which depicts an elderly couple sitting on their front porch. The proverbial figure of impending and unavoidable death is also shown in the frame with black hood and scythe.
Seeking temporary postponement of the inevitable, the two elderly people have set the Grim Reaper to cutting the overgrown grass in their yard with his scythe!
Both comical and realistic, the cartoon is a reminder that the refining fires of God, the ultimate messenger concerning death and life comes. While we may postpone or attempt to avoid the day, we stand with Malachi and finally admit, "who can endure the day of his coming...."
The doorbell rings, the voice calls, we are stopped in the midst of the ordinary. Suddenly there is no escape. Said Donne, "Do not ask for whom the bell tolls."
