What do prophets, Christians, men, Jews, women, children, clergy, and the population at large hold in common? They each can and many will suffer from depression during their life. According to a USA Today article (July 1992) clinical depression afflicts at least 11.5 million adult Americans. Depression is a factor in up to 70 percent of all United States suicides, and drains $27 billion from the national economy annually.
In a Time article titled, It's a Sad, Sad, World, (Dec. 14, 1992) a study is cited that indicates the younger a person is, the greater the chance that they have suffered from clinical depression sometime in their life. A person born before 1905 had a lower rate of depression than those born betwen 1905 and 1914, who in turn had a lower rate than those born between 1915 and 1924, and so on. A Psychology Today ("Boomer Blues," 1988) article stated that a 30-year-old is 10 times as likely to be depressed as his father and 20 times as likely to be depressed as his grandfather. -- Angus
