We were concerned when our eldest daughter headed off to a university nearly 1,000 miles from home. Even though it was a church-related school, we were not certain anyone would be there to give her the direction, advice and listening ear we thought she might need.
Those anxieties were quieted considerably when she came home that first Thanksgiving and told us of an orientation meeting which was held in the dormitory. All first year women were counseled by upper class women, faculty and housing personnel. As she summarized it, "They told us that no matter what we might hear, every woman on this campus is not sexually active, drinking alcohol and using drugs."
I thought to myself, "I could have told her that, but she would not hear it nearly as well as she did when it came from strangers."
David had the opportunity to give equivalent advice to his son. By and large, Solomon did not pay a great deal of attention. Maybe David should have arranged for someone else to give his boy the word about marital fidelity and extravagant federal spending.
