We are no different from...

We are no different from the people of Israel: we prepare for the Lord's coming with a song in our hearts just as they did. The passing of time does not change the desire in the human heart to burst into song when we feel the Lord's presence drawing near. The song of Zephaniah reflects the joy of the redeemed in the presence of the Lord, and folks through the ages have echoed the song ever since he first sang it.
Why does the singing continue as we prepare to celebrate the coming of the Lord? Harold E. Kohn provides us with one answer in his book, Where Heaven and Earth Meet. Kohn writes:
We are in a singing mood when we are giving more than we are getting. Songs come to mind and heart and lips when we are most conscious of God's greatness, his love, and his approval.
Maybe we are happiest at Christmastime because life is then most nearly what it should always be, giving is better than receiving, another's happiness more important than our own, and God seems strangely near.
Rejoice in the Lord always -- and let the music begin!
