Warren heard the call to follow God several years into his new career as an accountant. The call was to leave his job and his country to become a missionary in South America. Warren's friends and family thought he was going through some religious experience, which if he ignored it, would go away. His wife asked him pointedly, "How will you provide for your family?" Warren's response was like Abraham's, "God will provide."
"That's fine," she said, "but what about your children? Will you sacrifice your children's future for your dreams?"
Warren's response was the same. "If this is God's call, and I am sure it is, then God will provide for them, too. They will be better people because of the experience."
So, Warren applied to a missionary society, went for training in language and theology and left for South America with his wife and two small children.
It was not an easy call that Warren received. It was a major sacrifice and involved incredible changes in his life. But it wasn't nearly as difficult as the call that Abraham received to sacrifice his only son, Isaac.
