A twentieth-century Paul, who commended himself to others as a servant of the gospel, is Milan Haimovici. He was a prisoner in Romania during the communist oppression of Christians. Part of the prison regimen was to administer 25 lashes on those who had broken some prison rule. The prisons were overcrowded and the guards did not know the prisoners by name. Many times, Milan Haimovici went in place of someone else to receive the beatings, as a testimony to Christ, who was bruised for our iniquities and by whose stripes we are healed. It was the observation of another prisoner that Milan Haimovici not only gained the respect of the prisoners for himself, but also for the Christ he represented.
