As translators in Papua, New Guinea, came to the end of translating the New Testament
into the Sulka language, they hit a roadblock. In translating "His only begotten Son," they
used a phrase that was close in meaning but which the Sulka language assistants thought
was simply not clear. A new word, tro, was inserted. Tro means an only
child, but it also means a very special child who is protected from harm and treasured
above the others. The passage from John 3 was read again, with the word tro
inserted. The group became quiet. Now the passage was understandable: God so loved
the Sulkas that he was willing to give his tro.
