Tony Conigliaro was a rising star with the Boston Red Sox in the mid 60s. He was a power hitter who was one of the bright spots in the Red Sox line-up. His rising star quickly faded when he was hit by a pitched ball. The ball broke several of his facial bones. Not only had the ball damaged his eyesight but it had also affected his nerve at the plate. After months of rehabilitation he was ready to try it again as a major leaguer. But it was not to be. The light had gone out of Tony Conigliaro. He no longer stood fearlessly in the batter's box. His eyes no longer saw with the clarity of before. His years of hard service to hone his craft were now but faded memories of what were and what might have been. They were now gone forever, all too swiftly. -- Watson
