At the time of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, many people were praying to be saved. Radio communications were just coming into regular use. As soon as the iceberg was struck by the Titanic, the radio operator on the Titanic began to send an SOS signal. Close enough to be of help and to save lives was the steamship, California, only thirty minutes away, and that ship also was equipped with wireless radio. Unfortunately, the trained radio operator had shut his equipment off at 10:30 p.m. and had gone to bed.
