Three blind mice. Unable to see the turnpike rising up ahead on the horizon of tomorrow. A gospel trio bleating the blues in an off-key melody of moans. Unable to shout hallelujahs in the here and now. Grumbling patients seeking a Pied Piper physician to pipe away the back pains of yesterday's broken dreams. Bad Samaritans when it came to making decisions.
Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish theologian, wrote, "Life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forward."
The three Samaritans who accosted Christ on the gospel road had trouble committing themselves heart, soul, and mind to the Lord. They always glanced over their shoulders at prior commitments.
The first man was an exuberant chap unwilling to count the awesome cost of Christian discipleship. Conflicting duties kept the second man from following the Lord. A divided mind and a shilly-shallying inability to make an either/or decision kept the third villager home.
Christ calls each of us to a life of total commitment. We are called to plow ahead with the daily task and glorious opportunity of serving him whom we dare to call Savior, even Jesus the Christ.
