Though well able to do so, David did not take up arms to unite the two kingdoms of Judah and Israel. He was content to rest upon the promise of God that had come at his anointing. His vision of a united kingdom would wait, if that were necessary, for he knew that God had power to perform what he had promised. Oddly enough, the patient waiting, exercised by David, actually hastened the coming of the union of the kingdom. He had not alienated the people from him by harsh demands and pretentious planning and scheming.
Trust in God to bring about his will in our lives may be difficult to maintain, but the rewards are handsome indeed. I am reminded of the line in Hamlet, "There's a divinity that shapes our ends, Rough-hew them how we will." Though our own efforts may seem to thwart God's will in our lives, when we once give way to him, he sets the course right with amazing ability.
One flyer spoke of the first time he learned navigation. He learned that there were stations across the nation that broadcast signals for the purpose of plotting a course. One needed only draw intersecting lines on a map from point to point to discover exactly where he was. Our understanding of God's will for our lives may not be singularly clear at any one given moment, but God provides reference points through events and convictions that give us reassurance.
