Those of us who were...

Those of us who were mature October 4, 1957, remember how shocked the world was that the Soviets had launched Sputnik. It turns out that we might have been able to beat them into space. Of course, we have far surpassed them. "Increase our faith!"
Beginning in 1964 Coach John Wooden and UCLA won the national basketball championship 10 times in 12 years, a feat that will probably never be broken. As we look back at that we might easily get the wrong impression. Wooden early experienced success as he led his Martinville team to the 1927 Indiana state championship. This was followed by being an All-American player at Purdue. After that Wooden went into coaching and at the early age of 38 became the head coach at UCLA. Then Wooden and UCLA won their first national championship -- sixteen years later. "Increase our faith!"
If we knew the Civil War began in 1861 and ended in April, 1865, we might guess that by the summer of 1864 that all was going well for the Union forces. In fact, within one year of the eventual victory, the summer of 1864 was a dark time for the Union, and Lincoln, who had become renominated that summer, doubted that he would be re-elected. "Increase our faith!"
Of course, what we really need to do is use the little faith we already have. On October 4, 1777, George Washington established winter quarters at Valley Forge, a winter sorely testing the colonials.
