Thomas Aquinas said, "The most hopeful people in the world are the young and the
drunk: the first because they have little experience of failure, and the second because they
have succeeded in drowning theirs."
Christian hope isn't the "natural" hope that often resides in those who are young, good looking, living in a democracy, or whose families are wealthy (or, who are "drunk"). Christian hope is within us, but it comes from outside of us. It's God's future invading the present. Christian hope is the awareness of alternatives that energize our potential. It turns our life's wandering into a pilgrimage to heaven. Hope frees us to channel our harmful cravings into healthy desires to serve God and others. Hope draws us forward where we could never be pushed, all because, as the prayer of Psalm 71 states, "For you, O Lord, are my hope."
