There used to be a Nike commercial that featured a hard-boiled New York sports fan talking about the current landscape of professional sports. The commercial went something like this:
Let's face it y'all, with sports like they are right now, all those players we love to hate -- Alonzo Mourning, Reggie Miller and John Rocker -- they might be playing for us some day. And even though we love to hate them now, if they were on our team, we'd love 'em.
Sport fans are fickle. Even though they may hate a player when he's playing for another team, even though they may throw insults, snowballs or beer cups at him, it changes when that same athlete gets traded to the home team. All of a sudden, all is forgotten and the athlete is now their hero.
Perhaps that is how Paul felt when he wrote this passage to Timothy.
