There are times as a pastor that I wish I was driving a cross-country bus on a one-way trip. I think pastor friends know what I am talking about. We praise God that our parishioners are individuals, freethinking and intelligent. Yet, there are times when sensitivity to individual personalities becomes stressful. A pastor I knew once had to deal with a small group who made light of the Holy Spirit as needful or desirable for living the Christian life. This group never knew when they became Christians because "our parents raised us as Christians in this church." One day the women of this church were giving a shower for a young lady in the church who was soon to be married. A homeless person found his way into the church fellowship hall, interrupting the shower. He asked if the church could help him with a place to stay overnight. As the story is told today, one lady of the church responded very negatively and asked the man to leave before she called the police. Another lady simply rose from her seat and went over to the man and asked him to come talk with her in the hall. She left with the man. When she returned to the shower, the homeless man was housed and fed for the weekend, courtesy of this lady and her husband. It is reported that while the lady was gone from the shower one of the group made the remark, "I suppose the Holy Spirit told her to do that." That is food for thought, isn't it?
