A theological issue that continues...

A theological issue that continues to separate Christians is that of predestination. To what degree does God have everything mapped out for our lives and to what extent is it set in concrete, ordained by God. At a retreat this topic was being discussed and the debate became so fierce that they separated into two hostile factions.
One fellow arrived at the retreat late and went to the predestination group which asked angrily why he was there. He answered, "Well, I just decided to come of my own free will." They didn't like his response and ordered, "You can't join us. Go over there."
The man went over to the other group to which he had been directed and was challenged by their leader, "What are you doing over here?" The fellow said, "I was sent here." Answering as in a chorus the group said, "You can't belong to this group unless you come by your own free will."
It's hard for us to know for sure how God's sovereignty engages man's free will, but somewhere in this debate all we can say is that life and the Bible have taught us that God's intentionality and purposes are mysteriously present even before we are born. Maybe that is the real measure of God's grace.
