Tevye, in Fiddler On...

Tevye, in Fiddler On The Roof, faces the dilemma of honoring his daughter's desire to marry the young tailor or to carry out the deal that Yenta the Matchmaker has set up with Mr. Wolf, the butcher. Goldie, his spouse, is firmly convinced when Tevye tells her of a dream he has had in which her deceased relatives name the tailor as the person their daughter should marry. The scheme works. Only the details had to be worked out. In Luke 16, the rich man pleads with Jesus that his brothers will believe if someone were to come to them from the dead. Christ knows differently. He directs everyone's attention to the power of the Word. "They have Moses and the Prophets." Life is a time to hear and to respond to God's offer of salvation. No schemes have to be devised to get us out of the difficult situation of separation from God. The Lord has already acted on our behalf. Christ is the only name given under heaven by which we can be saved.
