The synagogue played an important role in the Pauline mission. Four-and-one-half million Jews lived outside of Palestine. Judaism was much respected for its monotheism, sense of accountability, and ethical imperatives. Devout Gentiles were much attracted. According to Luke, the synagogue provided Paul's first pulpit in a new place. Was this not part of God's preparation of the world for the Gospel? This contribution of Judaism needs to be carefully noted along with particular Lukan motives in the interest of ongoing Jewish-Christian relationships.
