In the summer of 1969, Scott accepted an offer of $80 to paint an entire two-story house. He was a high school student and thought the money sounded good, but the job was much bigger than he anticipated. The oil-based paint was hard to clean up. The sun was hot and the temperature rose to over ninety every day. Scott was miserable and imagined that the house owner would surely realize how hard he was working and would probably give him a big bonus at the end.
"Double the amount is what I deserve," he thought to himself. He also knew that the same man had hired another student to paint another house and was paying him $150.
When the job was done, Scott went to the man's house fully expecting to receive more that the agreed-upon $80. But he received only what he had agreed upon in the first place.
