Spirit of God descend upon...

"Spirit of God descend upon my heart ..." Strains from the familiar hymn ran through Theodore's thoughts as he tried to imagine what it would be like to have that happen. If the Spirit of God were to descend on him, enter his heart, would he know it had happened? He recalled the words of John Wesley who had described such an experience saying, "My heart was strangely warmed." He thought about the description in Acts of the Spirit's descent, the violent wind, the flaming tongues of fire, the outburst of foreign languages among the gathered people (Acts 2:1-4). He considered the account of Jesus' baptism in which the Holy Spirit was described as "descending like a dove" (Mark 1:10). Theodore longed to know God in such an intimate way. He wondered, in fact, if his strong desire was the problem. Perhaps it blocked his awareness. Maybe the Spirit of God caressed him every day in ways so ordinary he failed to notice. What was it the psalmist had said? He searched his thoughts, trying to remember. And suddenly the words from the 139th Psalm rose from the canyons of his memory: "Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?" (Psalm 139:7). -- Fannin
