Sometimes folk bemoan the fact that the contemporary church is not more like the church of the first century. As I see it, that is not the problem at all. The trouble is we are too much like the first century church. Peter was the rock upon which Christ built his church. But sometimes Peter was far more interested in possessing power, glory, and honor, than he was in hearing about the sacrifice needed to secure those things. He wanted to achieve Easter without first enduring Good Friday. Like Peter, we want to jump to receiving the rewards without first paying the price.
