Some words of pain and remorse echo for eternity: "Et tu, Brutus?' "O Absalom, my son, my son!" "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."
David had tried to save Absalom. Treacherous though he was, Absalom was still beloved of his father. But, as Julius Caesar wrote in Bellum Gallicum, "In extreme danger, fear feels no pity." So it was with the soldiers who defended David's kingdom. David's soldiers reacted as soldiers -- they killed the enemy.
