In some societies, after a healing miracle has occurred, it is natural and automatic to offer a sacrifice to the deity or supernatural agent involved. For example, when a child is ill in Sierre Leone, a ritual to exorcise the illness is enacted. Sometimes the child is said to be the victim of witchcraft and thus the diviner or healer bargains with the witch for a surrogate victim. This is usually a cock, a hen, or a sheep. Family members gather about the child laying hands on her/him while the animal exchange-victim is being ceremonially offered.
