Six-year-old Tommy was visiting our family for several days while his parents were out of town. Susan was reading a Bible story to Tommy, and to her own daughter, four-year-old Lisa. The story was that of Noah and the flood.
At the end of the story Tommy ran to the window. "What are you looking for?" asked Susan. "I'm looking for a real rainbow in the sky," said Tommy.
"I'm sorry, Tommy," said Susan, "the sky is too clear for a rainbow today. We can only see one on cloudy days when the sun shines through the rain."
Then Susan began to think about what she had said. She realized anew that God never sends a rainbow until after the clouds come and the rain falls. The rainbow comes to remind us of God's covenant with humankind, through Noah, but also to remind us that no matter how difficult the trial or temptation, he will give us the strength to pass through it and reach a spiritual victory. As we seek to discipline our spiritual lives we prepare ourselves for those times of testing, knowing that he will not forsake us nor forget us.
