Shane, the 1953 western epic directed by George Stevens and starring Alan Ladd, is considered by many critics as one of our finest motion pictures. Hosting an outstanding cast of actors and the splendid scenery of the "bigsky" northwest, the movie is an effective allegory about the conflict between righteousness and unrighteousness, as God-fearing, hardworking homesteaders -- epitomized by the lonely and mysterious Shane -- battle against the evil, land-grabbing, hard-drinking cattlemen, centered in the person of a blackclothed gunslinger played by Jack Palance.
