This scripture emerges from the awful recognition that a prophet or king has been martyred by the city of Jerusalem. It seems that heroes and heroines can only be acknowledged after they have died. Quite tragically a nation mourns its heroic figures only after the individual has poured out a life's energies on behalf of a project, a purpose, a cause.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hardly a hero to many Germans. However, he achieved heroic stature when he was martyred for the faith at Flossen Prison only a few days before he would have been liberated by the advancing Allies. For many Americans Martin Luther King Jr. was hardly a hero. After he had been murdered in Memphis on a hotel balcony he achieved heroic stature. Why is it that nations must first make of their heroes martyrs before they recognize the sheer genius, the benefit and the blessing that these individuals have given to the nation?
