A Russian soldier fell into gambling debt. Every day he thought he would win and pay off his debt, but he kept losing and the debt kept growing. At last, in desperation, he sat at a table, thinking there was no way out but to take his life. He wrote a note: "Who can pay so much?" Exhausted, he fell asleep.
It happened that Czar Nicholas came along and saw the soldier sleeping. He walked over to the table and read the note: "Who can pay so much?" The Czar took out his pen and wrote across the page: "Czar Nicholas." He could pay it, and he would pay it.
Our Lord Jesus Christ writes across the page where we have added up our debts and transgressions when we are wondering who could ever pay so much. Our Lord writes "Jesus Christ" and the debt is paid.
