Richard's drinking problem was extending into its second decade. With each passing year, the problem became worse. This was the fifth trip he had made to a substance abuse in-patient clinic and each sojourn was getting closer to the last. He had been in "detox" only six months ago. The time before that he had made it nearly a year.

It was obvious to everyone except him that he was losing more and more control over his life. He still liked to think that his problem and his life were still manageable.
