Researchers are eternal optimists. They believe that if they search diligently enough, meticulously follow each clue to its logical conclusion, they will find the answer to their quest. Truth and discovery propel them onward. When a researcher hits upon an avenue of research that she is convinced will lead to the desired solution, she becomes single-minded and tenacious. The lab lights burn late into the night; the social life is temporarily suspended; every ounce of energy and concentration is directed to the thread in her hands. She will tug at that thread, following each warp and weave until she has unraveled all its mysterious and at last she holds the attached reward. The Magi were very much like this. They sighted a star in the sky which they felt could only mean a king was born. The star stirred a deep longing in them for discovery and truth, which impelled them to follow that star to the end of its shining beam.
