Reginald H. Fuller* suggests that it might be helpful to compare Elijah's call of Elisha with Jesus' call of his disciples as related in the Gospel for this Sunday. Elisha asks: "Let me kiss my father and mother good-bye, and then I will go with you." When Jesus called two would-be disciples, they said: "Sir, first let me go back and bury my father." (TEV) Elisha's call was one that would add to already existing responsibilities. Jesus' call is different. All existing responsibilities have to be given up.
Another difference is that Elijah's mantle passes to Elisha. He can succeed Elijah. He will become a prophet like his master when the latter finally departs. But when Jesus ascends, his followers do not replace him. They remain always followers, and he remains always present as their living and empowering Lord.
