The pulpits in some European cathedrals are very ornate. The preacher may have to climb an elaborate staircase and enter through a small door. Standing in the pulpit, the preacher sees a dove painted above on the underside of a little pulpit-roof suspended over him.
This hovering dove, of course, represents the Holy Spirit. This painting is a reminder of who is the center of attention during worship and especially during the sermon; not the preacher, but the Word preached, the Word of God, Jesus.
Paul reminds all preachers today that "we do not preach ourselves, but Christ as Lord," and that, "we have (the light of knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."
