Pioneers tell similar stories. When they first settled the western plains, they had nothing.
They soon exhausted most of their supplies, and many lived on the generosity of their
neighbors. It was common for neighbors to share vegetables, meat, and even their homes,
with the new settlers.
The new settlers worked hard to clear the land of trees, or cut through the tough prairie grass to prepare it for seeding. At the very least, one growing season would pass before the land produced food to sustain the new settlers.
