"He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness." But simply knowing personal weakness will not guarantee gentleness; it may produce more bitter condemnation in the effort of one-upmanship. "When a man really knows his own sin, has frankly admitted it to himself, has asked and received God's forgiveness, then he is prepared to extend forgiveness to others. In this sense of the word no man can ever be gracious to others until God has been gracious to him. 'He who is forgiven little, loves little.' (Luke 7:47)"
