People repeat themselves, complaining about others who repeat themselves -- like
preachers. Yet, some things bear repeating. We need to be reminded of God's grace,
warned of temptations, and encouraged to pray and obey. We repeat what's worth
repeating -- like the creeds of the church, expressing the center of the Christian faith.
However, some things are so true and so important they need be stated only once. Sally and Robert Fells adopted two children as infants. As the children were old enough and able to understand, they told them they were adopted. When their daughter, Selona, was seven, she said to her mother, "You said my biological mommy gave me to you to be my mommy."
Sally said, "Yes."
"Are you going to give me to another mommy?"
Sally remained outwardly calm and stated what was most important as clearly and briefly as possible, "No, honey. I love you very much and I'll be your mommy forever."
Selona said, "Okay, I just wanted to know." She never asked again, and today Selona is also an adoptive mother. She needed to hear only once of her mother's absolute, unchanging love.
Some things need be done only once. Jesus offered himself once for all. His one expression of God's love for us was sufficient. Jesus' self-offering demonstrated once for all God's love for us that empowers us to love others. If we speak about it too much, it's because Jesus' sacrificial love is the hub around which our faith turns.
