Paul talks in this passage about the mystery of God's grace. This is certainly a major theme of Epiphany, this coming together of Gentiles and Jews, of Magi from the East joining with shepherds, all recognizing the oneness of God's unsearchable riches through Christ. Wouldn't you love to have been there to hear the Magi explain their trip to the folks back home? "You have traveled all that distance, spent all that money and time, and you found -- what? A baby? And he was where? In a manger? In a little flea-bitten town called Bethlehem? There was no grand palace? No fancy balls celebrating his birth; just ratty-looking shepherds, and then you had to go home by a different route to escape Herod? And you went ahead and gave him those expensive presents?" It is indeed a mystery. How many times do we have an "epiphany" in our lives? God makes God's presence known in our very midst and we fail to see it, or we dismiss it as "just a dirty manger in an old barn." We refuse to give our gifts, when instead we need to be trusting the mystery of God's grace.
