Paul Johnson's book, Intellectuals, tells of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who felt that he had a unique love for humanity and had been endowed with unprecedented gifts and insights to increase its felicity. When we look at how Rousseau acted, however, we find that he placed each of five newborn children in a notorious orphanage. None of the infants survived.
