A pastor was looking for a good illustration with which to help his Confirmation students to understand the Trinity. He thought he found it in the image of an egg, which is one egg, yet comprised of a shell, a white, and the yoke. When he cracked the egg in front of the class to demonstrate the three-in-one, out came a double yolk. The story is told of Saint Augustine walking along the Mediterranean beach contemplating the Trinity. He saw a young child running back and forth with a bucket from the sea to a hole she had dug. He stopped and asked the child about the activity. "Oh, I'm putting the giant sea into my little hole," she exclaimed gleefully. Then, it dawned upon Augustine that is just what he was trying to do -- put the great notion of the identity of God into his little, human brain. All our attempts to describe the mystery of the Trinity with words of the flesh ultimately come up short. Yet, we will try again and again with the Spirit's help, even when words fail us. For God calls us to know more fully and grow closer in relationship to the one we name "Abba," Christ, and Spirit. -- Molldrem
