Pastor Johnson was new in his parish. St. John's Church was in a small town. Like many towns its size, it had a gas station, a small local grocery, a high school, and a couple of congregations. As Pastor Johnson went from home to home visiting people and learning their stories, he often asked people how they had come to join St. John's Church. Many times he heard the same answer: Martha down at the local grocery. It seems that as people would buy their groceries at the small local store, she would talk with them while she checked their groceries out. In the course of the conversations Martha would tell folks about Jesus and would often invite the townspeople to church. It was an amazingly effective process. His curiosity aroused, Pastor Johnson began to be methodical in asking every member of the church how it was that they had gotten to know Jesus. When he was finished he discovered an amazing thing! Sixty-three people were active in the church because of Martha's invitations. In the simple process of knowing Jesus and inviting others to come and meet him, Martha had a tie to almost half of the active members of the church!
