The past twelve months have been difficult for Rose. First, she lost her job, due to downsizing or merger or some other excuse. Then a month before Christmas, unable to pay her mortgage, she was about to lose her home, as well. Rose recently became a Christian and began attending worship on a regular basis as well as joining a small group. It was at the small group where she met Jane. The two women soon became friends.
"Every sermon I hear," Rose confided one day to her friend, "is the message that God will take care of you." In frustration she asked, "Where is God now?" She lost her job and was about to lose her home. That was a question Jane found difficult to answer. It was then that Jane decided to buys gifts for her friend. She bought some personal, practical items, wrapping them up as if they were expensive gifts. She also bought a small Christmas tree, complete with colorful miniature ornaments. Jane had second thoughts, however, wondering if such a gift might be a mistake. It did after all seem pointless, the woman was about to lose her home.
Those gifts were much appreciated by Rose. Somehow, in the spirit of Christmas that she cannot explain, those gifts gave her a fresh dose of hope. She believed what she had heard and read and trusted that God would take care of her -- God would see her through the dark days.
God gave humanity the greatest gift of all -- God's own Son, Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul writing to the Romans summarizes God's gift. Jesus was born for all people, "including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ."
