This passage from Zechariah foreshadows the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The prophet insists the Messiah will come, not in a horse drawn chariot, but riding on a donkey.
Some scholars note that this relates to ancient times when a king waging war rode a horse, but during times of peace he rode a donkey. Therefore, Jesus, the Messiah, rode a donkey to indicate his status as the Prince of Peace.
A ride on a donkey rather than a horse also indicates the humble circumstances which characterized the life of Christ. He was, after all, born in Bathlehem, not Rome; raised in Nazareth, not Jerusalem; selected his apostles from the ranks of the ordinary rather than from national leaders; and then was buried in a borrowed tomb after having died on the town's garbage heap. Somehow Zechariah predicting a ride on a donkey is consistent with the circumstances of the Messiah's ministry.
