In this passage we have a very early instance of inoculation. Israelites, bitten by fiery serpents, were shown a bronze image of the serpent set high on a pole. Something about seeing the end result of their behavior toward God prompted remorse, spurned change, and they were healed. By taking in a bit of their punishment vicariously, they became armed against the deadly peril of the snakebite. They avoided the consequences of their sinfulness. This is not the kind of inoculation that we have with a needle, but it does have working parallels. Vicarious suffering has power to heal.
