On Palm Sunday the members...

On Palm Sunday the members of an adult class were asked to think silently on some time in life when they had trusted in a false god. Their reflections, they were told, would be completely private. They would not have to share what the god was, nor would they have to say what they had done during the time of their trusting. They should simply recall a period in life when they had given themselves to one of the many of lesser gods which have dominated the latter decades of the Twentieth Century.
At the end of a thoughtful silence the leader asked group members to reflect further on that time of trusting. What had happened in their lives? And what had the living God done with them? If they wished, they could share their remembrances when they were done. Another time of quietness followed.
At length one member spoke what seemed to be on the minds of all. "I finally realized that the god I had trusted in was powerless and broken. Then I too was broken. At that point," he said, looking about at the other members of the group, "God quietly rode into my brokenness and tried once again to show me the better way."
